The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization that was established on October 24, 1945, after the end of World War II. Its main objective is to promote international cooperation and maintain international peace and security.

 The UN currently has 193 member states, and its headquarters are in New York City. 

The organization is composed of various bodies, including the General Assembly, the Security Council, the International Court of Justice, and the Secretariat. 

The UN also has specialized agencies, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), which work on specific issues related to their respective mandates. 

The UN works on a wide range of issues, including peacekeeping, human rights, development, climate change, and disarmament, among others.
