A billionaire wants to buy an island to welcome migrants

The idea will be difficult to achieve but reopens the debate on practical solutions to the crisis of migrants. Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris, proposes to purchase an island off of Italy or Greece in order to install hundreds of thousands of migrants crossing the Mediterranean to the peril of their lives.

"Greece or Italy, sell me an island, I will declare its independence, will welcome migrants, and will provide them jobs through the construction of their new country", recently launched on Twitter the wealthy telecommunications magnate.

Naguib sawiris says in twiter : Greece or Italy sell me an island, ill call its independence and host the migrants and provide jobs for them building their new country
Billionaire recognizes, however, that the challenges abound, starting with convincing Greece or Italy to sell an island, or determine the legal existence of the new state. "Of course it's feasible," he told AFP Thursday. "You have dozens of islands that are uninhabited and could accommodate hundreds of thousands of refugees," he says.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 350,000 people fleeing poverty or conflict in their country of origin have crossed the Mediterranean in the hope of joining Europe. More than 2,600 died during this journey, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
